Prohibition Liquor Co heads South to Penny’s Hill, McLaren Vale

Prohibition Liquor Co. is heading south with its award-winning gins, opening a tasting room in the world-renowned  McLaren Vale wine region. The craft spirits specialist will throw open the doors at its bar this Saturday (September 17), located in the original 1855 coach house at the picturesque Penny’s Hill in McLaren Vale.

To be called ‘Prohibition at Penny’s Hill’, the bar will initially open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am to 6pm. Plans are already underway for a new bar fit out and enclosed pergola area, to be completed by Christmas. An additional seated area will open by April next year.

It will serve Prohibition Liquor Co’s gins that have collected more than 100 national and international awards, as well as a selection of Penny’s Hill wines and platters featuring the Prohibition-infused cheese produced by Woodside Cheese Wrights.

This is the first regional move for Prohibition Liquor Co, which opened its distillery and tasting room in Gilbert Street, Adelaide, in late 2017. Adam Carpenter, who founded Prohibition in late 2015 with Wes Heddles, said when the opportunity presented itself to have a Prohibition presence in McLaren Vale, the decision by the team to embrace it was unanimous.

“We weren’t actively looking to open a regional offering, but a move to McLaren Vale to be part of Penny’s Hill felt a perfect fit with our brand,” Adam said. “McLaren Vale is known the world over for its award-winning wines, picturesque landscapes and regional food offerings. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

Penny’s Hill was acquired by The Randall Wine Group – which also owns the iconic Seppeltsfield Estate in the Barossa – in April this year. The Randall Wine Group and Penny’s Hill Executive Chairman and Proprietor Warren Randall said: “We are thrilled to welcome our very first tourism business to Penny’s Hill in McLaren Vale – ‘Prohibition’, another wonderful 100% owned South Australian owned business.
“The opening of ‘Prohibition at Penny’s Hill’ is the first step in developing the Estate into the equivalent of the ‘Seppeltsfield of the South’.

“Our vision is to evolve Penny’s Hill into a world-class tourism and wine destination, carrying an Australian theme, with appeal to a family audience”. “A place where you can relax with family and friends, whilst immersing yourselves into the beautiful McLaren Vale landscape, with a glass of Penny’s Hill wine, or Prohibition Gin, amongst our 200-year-old red gums.”

Prohibition at Penny’s Hill is located at 281 Main Rd, McLaren Vale. Open Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am – 6pm. Walk-ins are welcome but bookings are encouraged by calling 0487 290 959.

The Prohibition distillery and tasting room is co-located with Bootleg Coffee Co. and Next Door bar at 22 Gilbert Street, Adelaide.
