2023 Penny's Hill Yeenunga Shiraz
McLaren Vale
THE VINEYARD
Located in the northwestern corner of the region, overlooking the Onkaparinga Gorge to the north and extending back across McLaren Vale to the south, with views reaching Gulf St Vincent. The Yeenunga vineyard hosts a variety of soil types, with the old-vine Shiraz thriving in shallow topsoils over weathered siltstone and sandstone rock.
WINEMAKING
Hand picked on 31 March, the fruit was crushed into an open fermenter for a 48-hour cold soak, followed by 11 days on skins with regular pump-overs to extract tannins, colour, and flavour. It was gently pressed to stainless steel, where fermentation was completed, before being transferred to French oak puncheons for 16 months of maturation. The winemaking focus was to retain freshness, spice, and the earthy structure that hallmarks this vineyard site.
TASTING NOTE
Fragrant Indian spices, plum, tilled earth, pine, cedar, and boot polish define the classic Yeenunga aromatics. The palate is brooding, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and dark fruits of plum, cherry, and persimmon, balanced by forest floor and olive tapenade notes. Fine savoury tannin structure is a feature of this wine.
95 Points - Marcus Ellis, 2026 Halliday Wine Companion
“The single-vineyard pair to the grenache that was released to much acclaim this year, this comes off '72-contour-planted vines, with the soils studded with ironstone and quartz. Open fermented, then matured in older barrels for 16 months. Blackberry, blood plum, dark chocolate, baking spices, old leather, dried black olives, clove, black pepper and star anise, with red fruits plumping up with air. It’s an intense yet measured and expressly savoury wine that speaks of its site, with the refined and silky play of tannin a defining feature.”
