OUR VINEYARDS
Exceptional sites. Sustainable practices. Distinctive wines
At Penny’s Hill, we are committed to growing outstanding fruit across our vineyard sites to make vibrant wines with complexity and interest, each telling a story of site and soil.
Since 1988, sustainability has been a core part of our vineyard philosophy. In 2023, we were certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, a national program that helps grape growers and winemakers measure and improve environmental, social and economic practices across the vineyard and winery. Our vineyard and winemaking teams work closely together to ensure vine health, optimum ripeness and fruit character. Parcels are harvested separately and handled in small batches to preserve purity and provide greater flexibility at blending. Our proximity to the winery allows for precise hand-picking decisions and minimal fruit handling. Each of our estate sites brings a unique quality to the wines we produce.

Location: Onkaparinga Gorge
Yeenunga Vineyard
TOTAL AREA: 21.2 ha
PLANTED: 1971
VINES: Shiraz and Grenache
The historic Yeenunga Vineyard is nestled in the northern hills of McLaren Vale. Planted to Shiraz and bush vine Grenache, the site features a variety of soil types, with the old vines thriving in shallow topsoils over weathered siltstone and sandstone. While the origin of its name remains unknown, the site is renowned in the region for its horseshoe contours and stunning views across McLaren Vale and the Gulf St Vincent.
“The 2025 vintage marks my third year working with the remarkable Yeenunga vineyard. Over the past two vintages, we’ve observed some fascinating nuances compared to our other single-vineyard parcels of Shiraz and Grenache in McLaren Vale – both in the winery and during blending sessions with our team." - Alexia Roberts, Chief Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer - Brands

Location: Blewitt Springs
The Springs
TOTAL AREA: 23.96ha
PLANTED: 1949
VINES: Grenache, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon
Only two hectares of 76-year-old bush vine Grenache are sourced from this prized vineyard in Blewitt Springs. Sitting at 136 metres elevation and set in deep sandy soils typical of the subregion, this sustainably certified, low-yielding site produces fruit with purity, finesse and unmistakable regional character — the foundation of our Single Vineyard Grenache. In 2024, this special site was the source of our most celebrated release to date, earning five trophies at the McLaren Vale Wine Show, the title of Bushing Monarchs, and top honours in the James Halliday Grenache Challenge.

Location: McMurtrie Road East
Skeleton Key
TOTAL AREA: 17.8 ha
PLANTED: 1991 to 1996
VINES: Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon
Located in the lower eastern foothills of McLaren Vale, this narrow-planted, high-density vineyard was established between 1991 and 1996 and produces lower yields of premium Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Its slightly elevated position provides cooler ripening conditions and even development, resulting in fruit with intensity and balance. Planted with Shiraz clone 1654, the reduced crop load per vine enhances concentration and structure. The standout from this site is our Shiraz from the elevated Skeleton Key Block — a wine that showcases pure site expression, lower yields and exceptional balance.

Location: Penny's Hill Estate
Malpas Road + Goss Corner
TOTAL AREA: 24.7 ha
PLANTED: 1991–1996
VINES: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Located south of the Penny’s Hill Cellars, Goss Corner Vineyard was once grazing land before being converted to a vineyard in 1996. Planted to Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier, it continues to produce fruit with richness and approachability across its 9.7 hectares. Nearby, the 15-hectare Malpas Road Vineyard, planted between 1991 and 1993, features flat, cracking black Bay of Biscay soils. Its consistent vine vigour and structure make it one of our most reliable sites, delivering Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with concentration and plush tannins. Wines made from these estate vineyards form part of our Homestead Collection — named for their proximity to the historic Ingleburne Homestead.
